Woman Dies After Being Hit By Cable Car

February 1, 2006

The mother of a San Francisco judge died at SF General Hospital three days after she was struck by a cable car as she crossed the street.

Joyce Yuet Wah Lam, 76, was struck Saturday by a southbound cable car on the Powell-Mason line as she was outside the crosswalk at Filbert and Mason streets.

Lam suffered a fractured skull and broken ribs, pelvis and collar bone. She died Tuesday after an apparent heart attack.

Lam was the mother of Newton Lam, a San Francisco Superior Court judge. Another of her five children, Wilson Lam, said his mother had been struck about a block from where she lived.

Joyce Lam told relatives that she had looked both ways before stepping into the street outside the crosswalk.

A witness had reported that the cable car brakeman rang the bell to try to get Joyce Lam's attention. 'My mom didn't respond,'' he said.

Maggie Lynch, a Muni spokeswoman, said the agency was looking into the accident. The brakeman has been put on nondriving duties, a routine step while the investigation continues.
