Interstate 80 Reopens After Fairfield Accident

March 22, 2006

A crash occurred when Ernell Freeman, 36, of Fairfield entered I-80 traffic in her Toyota Corona from Travis Boulevard.

Witnesses said Freeman hit a big rig passing in the No. 4 lane. The big rig veered to the left and clipped the back of a white Ford pickup truck in the No. 3 lane, causing it to spin into the center divider. On its way, the pickup hit a second big rig.

The second big rig's then hit a GMC Sierra pickup truck. Shortly after, a Hyundai Sonata got tangled up in the chain-reaction collision.

Freeman was taken by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut where she was treated for facial lacerations and a complaint of pain.

The Sonata's driver, Jennifer Freedy, 36, of Vacaville, complained of back pain.

The GMC Sierra's driver, Sherry Case, 38, of Vallejo, complained of pain in her hand.

Both Freedy and Case were taken to North Bay Medical Center in Fairfield.

One big-rig driver, George Alonso, 30, of North Highlands, complained of pain in his left leg and right arm but refused treatment.

The fourth driver, from Napa, was not injured.
