Doctors have reported an improvement in the condition of two people that were injured in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 101 in Brisbane.
The accident occurred around 2 a.m. on Saturday and it originally put both people in critical condition, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred after a male driver Alec Carnessale, 21, of Mill Valley, maneuvered his car into the oncoming lane of the highway. Just south of Sierra Point Parkway, Carnessale crashed his southbound, dark blue 2002 Hyundai into a northbound Subaru in the far left lane.
Investigators have determined that Carnessale must have been driving the wrong way on the freeway for quite some time because the two directions are separated by a concrete barrier for most of the extent of the highway in that area.
Investigators are still waiting to receive a final toxicology report from the San Mateo County Coroner's office to determine if Carnessale was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Initial reports turned up open alcohol container in his automobile.
