Auto Accident Kills One, Injures Two

December 29, 2005

After a wrong-way vehicle crashed head-on into two other vehicles on southbound Highway 99 on Friday, three Stockton men were sent to area hospitals where one was later pronounced dead due to injuries, said the California Highway Patrol.

The deceased man was identified as Victor Lee Emery, 64, of Stockton, after being admitted to Lodi Memorial Hospital Friday morning, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said.

Emery was driving his 2005 Chevrolet on the southbound land headed the opposite way near Turner Road about 11:15 a.m. Friday when he was met head-on by a 2005 Chevrolet pickup that was being driven by Tomas Rubio, 46, of Bakersfield.

Emery hit and continued off Rubio's car in the wrong direction and collided with a 1997 Ford Explorer driven by 26-year-old Steven Knight of Stockton.

Knight, as well as his passenger, 30-year-old Richard Royal of Stockton, was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center when they complained of pain.

Rubio and one of his three passengers, all Bakersfield residents, stated that they had felt pain but none of the four riding in the pickup required any hospitalization.

There were no other injuries reported in the accident. According to CHP, seat belts were worn by all those involved in the collisions.

The Highway Patrol is still in the process of determining why Emery had ended up driving on the wrong side of the street.

The crash caused the southbound lanes to be shut down for about 30 minutes, and as a result, traffic was backed up for about two miles.
